Why the business thought about electricity and heat together
The PV system generates around 620,000 kWh per year. Until now, around 100,000 kWh of this went into the grid for just under 3 ct/kWh. At the same time, the site has a high heat demand, which was previously covered by gas.
As part of a comprehensive modernisation, heat pumps are being added, and the EcoHash is becoming part of the new energy concept. This way, the surplus electricity not only earns revenue but also contributes to the heat supply.
An EcoHash that puts electricity to use and supplies heat
The installation is an EcoHash with nine immersion-cooled Bitcoin miners and three heating cassettes. The miners operate in a coolant that absorbs their heat. This heat reaches the heating circuit via the heating cassettes.
We assume that at least 60 % of the heat generated each year can be used in the heating circuit. Exactly how much it will be depends mainly on whether heat is needed at the same time as PV surplus occurs.
What to expect from the project
According to the model calculation, the EcoHash runs around 2,050 hours a year. At least around 42,600 kWh of heat per year flows into the heating system, covering part of the heat demand.
| Before | Planned with EcoHash | |
|---|---|---|
| Surplus electricity | around 100,000 kWh per year fed in, just under 3 ct/kWh | put to use on site through Bitcoin mining |
| Heat | gas heating | at least 42,600 kWh per year planned from the waste heat |
| Revenue | feed-in tariff | Bitcoin and saved heating energy |
Good to know: All figures are model values, not measurement results. It is assumed that at least 60 % of the heat generated is used in the heating system. How well PV surplus and heat demand coincide in time has not yet been confirmed by complete load profiles. We will add initial measurements as soon as enough operating data is available.
“At this site, energy is thought of holistically. The EcoHash puts the surplus solar electricity to use through computing power and passes the heat on to the building services. In this way, we are playing our part in a modern, high-performance energy system.”

Conclusion: surplus electricity as part of the energy concept
Instead of feeding in surplus electricity for just under 3 ct/kWh, the site uses it twice: for Bitcoin mining and as a heat source for the building.
This is possible because the EcoHash does not stand alone but is part of the new energy concept with heat pumps. Especially at sites with a high heat demand, this shows how electricity and heat can be used together.
Is this solution right for your business too?
A HASHLYNK system is particularly interesting if
- your generation system regularly produces significantly more electricity than you consume yourself,
- the feed-in tariff is low or the grid limits feed-in,
- you want to expand your system, but feeding in more does not pay off,
- you could make good use of waste heat, for example for heating, hot water or process heat.
A site assessment shows whether this applies to your site.
